Unit 28 : Using Should
In this lesson of Learning English as a Second Language, we shall learn:

* The Usage of Should
* Structures of Should

Urdu Explanation:

http://www.atozofenglish.com/2009/04/uni...in_14.html

English Explanation:

In today's lesson we shall learn how to use SHOULD. Like CAN SHOULD is also modal verb like other modal verbs. It does not contain any meaning instead, it is used before a verb and starts expressing its meaning.

Remember that all modal verbs do not contain any meaning what all of them do is that when they are combined with a verb, they change the idea of that verb. It does not mean that modals change the meaning of a verb.

e.g. The verb EAT shall keep the same meaning but when combined with different modals its idea changes.

e.g. You can eat 10 bananas a day. (here CAN (modal verb) changes the idea of (EAT) and adds the sense or idea of ability.

Now, observe this sentence.

You should eat 10 bananas a day.

The whole sentence is same but the with different modal verb (SHOULD) expressing the idea or sense of mild suggestion.

Should is a modal verb and is used to express mild suggestions or advice.

e.g. My rooms is dirty , I should clean it.

You look tired, you should rest.

She looks sick, she should see a doctor.

In all of the above sentences you can observe that should is expressing a mild suggestion, a soft advice . In other words, SHOULD expresses that it is a good idea or a good advice.

We always use SHOULD with first form of a verb. We do not use (TO) or add (S/ES) with verb.

e.g. Correct : He should study with great concentration

Incorrect : He should to study with great concentration

Incorrect : He should studies with great concentration

Incorrect : He should plays actively

Contraction of Should with NOT

You can easily contract should with not -----> Should + not = Shouldn't

Structures of Should

Affirmative : Subject + Should + 1st Form of a Verb + Object

We should help the poor

She should come on time.

Negative : Subject + Should + not + 1st Form of a Verb + Object

We should not help the poor

She should not come on time

Interrogative : Should + Subject +1st Form of a Verb + Object?

Should we help the poor?

Should she come on time?
